May 2008

WE WELCOME you to the website for Southlands Methodist Church, in York, which we hope will give you a picture of the work and witness of the church and its members in the South Bank area of York.

Many pages on this website have been updated this month, including the detailed calendar of events and activities, and the message or thought for the month which has been written by a Southlands member.

Where is Southlands?

Southlands is situated in Bishopthorpe Road, York, just a few minutes walk outside the city walls. It is at the top of a hill at the junction with Southlands Road, on the south side of the city. A location map can be found on the page detailing our links with other churches in the area.

The church has a tremendous outreach in the South Bank area of the city through an extensive programme of work with children and young people.

It is a living church and we hope you will look at the other pages on this site, including our Message page, and the Calendar.

Sunday services

Our minister, the Rev Keith Himsworth

Services in May are held at Southlands at 10.00am and 6.30pm, but there will be no evening service at Southlands on Trinity Sunday (May 18). Instead there will be a circuit service, marking Aldersgate Sunday, at Central Methodist Church, in St Savioursgate.

History

The church originally started in a butcher's shop in the South Bank area of the city before opening on its present site on the crest of a hill in Bishopthorpe Road in 1887. Structural alterations have taken place on several occasions in its 120-year history.

Last year we installed a new sound and digital projection system with loop, had the premises rewired throughout, and had the original pine block floor in the Youth & Community Centre replaced with a new floor of European oak blocks.

Magazine

The Southlands magazine, OUTLOOK, which is published on the first Sunday of the month, gives news and information about what is going on at Southlands, and in the York South Circuit, to which this church belongs.
