THE church holds a number of social events through the year and the most recent of these were the anniversary party on Saturday, November 22, with a mix of line-dancing, games and quizzes to suit all ages, and the Christmas Family Lunch after morning service on Sunday, December 14.
We also had our first Christmas Festival over two weekends at the beginning of December which was a huge success with 22 decorated Christmas trees in the church representing church groups, local businesses and other churches and organisations in the area and a total of 24 Nativity scenes from around the world.
This event was a real team effort and went so well that it is almost certain we will repeat it this year.
Our badminton club has been going for more than 29 years. It meets in the Youth & Community Centre at Southlands, starting at 7.30pm on Mondays, and is primarily a social club for church members and friends. In addition to badminton there are some other games available for your leisure.
The City of York Gospel Choir, which has built up quite a following, will give a concert at Southlands on Saturday, April 25, at 7.00pm. The event is being arranged by the Southlands fundraising group and tickets at £5.00 each are available from Bob Lawrence or any of the other church stewards.
Film Club
Our Film Club shows films usually once every two months on a Saturday evening. The most recent of these was Mama Mia on Saturday, March 28.
Southlands has been running a walking club for a good number of years. The new season of walks starts on Thursday, April 16, as they head for Hovingham and Stonegrave. The second walk will be on Thursday, April 30, in the Whitwell-on-the-Hill area. The walks are held fortnightly on Thursdays, and all are between four and 5½ miles long, attracting about a dozen walkers.
Names for each walk should be given to the walk leader, whose name will be in the church notice sheet as each walk comes up. Details of transport requirements or offers of seats in cars should be given to walk leaders at the same time.
Working parties meet on the second Tuesday of the month from 6.00pm for odd jobs around the property and, in the summer months, to tend the church gardens.
