Churches Together in South-West York

FOR many years we at Southlands Methodist Church have been working with other local churches in South-West York where most of our members live.

wpeF.jpg (29293 bytes)Churches Together in South West York has its own mission statement setting out ways in which churches should work together and support each other. This should be on display in each of the churches in the area, as they have all undertaken to support it.

Last summer, in conjunction with Churches Together in South East York, we were able to hold three Praise By The Bridge events on the paved area beside the Millennium Bridge, the last of which took place in September. This year these are being held on the third Sunday of the month in May, June, July, August and September.

Churches Together has its own battery-powered wireless PA system for use principally for Churches Together events, particularly the Praise By The Bridge services, but it can also be hired out at £10 a day.

Churches Together In South West York runs occasional ecumenical Bible studies, the most recent of which was a Lent course held in the run-up to Easter.

In addition, Churches Together supplies leaflets to guest houses and hotels giving details of churches and services in the area for visitors, and also promotes Alpha courses.

We believe it's important to work together in the community and that whenever possible our members swpeF.jpg (29293 bytes)hould meet together for fellowship.

Last summer we had a stall at the Rowntree Park birthday party on July 15 with a display featuring the different churches in our area. We also gave away free low-energy light bulbs, symbolising the Light of the World, our Lord Jesus Christ. Those who manned the stall had to work in steady rain, but fortunately we had a gazebo to provide some shelter.

It is hoped to undertake a similar exercise at this year's Rowntree Park birthday on July 13 (with better weather!).

Apart from belonging to this grouping known as Churches Together in South West York, Southlands is also a member of Churches Together in York and actively supports the work of One Voice.
