Fun in a uniform

UNIFORMED groups, meeting during term time, offer children and young people the opportunity to learn new experiences in a disciplined atmosphere.

Girls who join the Rainbows (5pm on Mondays) can eventually progress to the Brownies (6.30pm on Tuesdays) and then on to Guides (7.00pm on Wednesdays) with opportunities to experience life in the great outdoors world of camping. All three of these groups are full and they also have waiting lists so it is advisable to apply early.

THE GUIDES: Southlands Guides recently travelled to Birmingham for their Big Gig event and had a great time despite missing out on a pre-booked tour of Cadbury World.
They left York at about 9.30am and reached Cadbury World at about 12.30pm, had lunch and went to the Cadbury World Show.
Guide Leader Diane Main said: "To our dismay, all the power went off and the building was evacuated and closed down for the day without us going on the tour which had been paid for.
"Not only did we have to register for refunds / replacement tickets for another day we were now stuck with four hours to kill before the Big Gig at the Birmingham arena."
In the end the Guides used maps and Satnav to find the nearest attractions and went to Sarehold Mill, a Grade 2 listed working watermill on the River Cole with a museum.
"The people there were very nice when we told them what had happened and they gave us some quizzes and trails to do around the mill for which the girls got certificates."
The Big Gig started with Sugababes and finished with a group called Scouting for Girls who were very popular and had everyone singing along to their big hits.
Half way through there was a little promo film to remind everyone that Guiding UK is taking part in a project entitled Changing The World by promoting awareness and raising money for one of 19 charities.
Southlands Guides plan to work with Help The Hospices, arranging a number of activities and fund-raising events next year.

CUB SCOUTS (6.30pm on Thursdays): The Cubs at Southlands, who can progress to the Scouts at St Chad’s, recently had six members taking part in a conservation day along with akela Jo Furmidge. They were among 250 leaders, Cubs and Scouts from the Ebor District at South Bank Park, Acomb, for the event.
Ben Crockatt, Peter Judson and Nigel Booth are pictured, above, being shown how to make bird boxes for tits and robins.

PARADE SERVICES: The uniformed groups
are invited to share in a Parade and All Age Worship Service held in the church five times a year.
