UNIFORMED groups, meeting during term time, offer children and young people the opportunity to learn new experiences in a disciplined atmosphere.
Girls who join the Rainbows (5pm on Mondays) can eventually progress to the Brownies (6.30pm on Tuesdays) and then on to Guides with opportunities to experience life in the great outdoors world of camping. All three of these groups are full and they also have waiting lists so it is advisable to apply early.
Recently a group of Guides from Southlands celebrated the movement's World Thinking Day in Liverpool, the 2008 City of Culture along with nearly 7,500 Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from all over the country. The picture, above left, shows some of the Southlands contingent with Guide Leader Diane Main, second left, on Liverpool's waterfront.
The Guides are planning to spend a couple of nights in August on a destroyer, HMS Belfast, which is moored on the Thames.
Boys joining the Cubs at Southlands (6.30pm on Thursdays) can progress to the Scouts at St Chads. Last year the movement marked 90 years of Cub Scouts and this year it is marking 100 years of Scouting. Recently "Professor Fiddlesticks" spent two sessions with the Cubs at Southlands and one of the boys is pictured, above right, practising one of the circus skills which were being taught.
The uniformed groups are invited to share in a Parade and All Age Worship Service held in the church five times a year.
