Friday funtime for juniors and intermediates

THERE have been several occasions in the past term when there have been more than 50 children and young people on the premises at Southlands on Friday evenings.
While this is a cause for celebration it is also something which the church needs to think about because, quite simply, it means more leaders are needed.
This is the view of the current leadership team who recently had to appeal for emergency help when by coincidence it turned out that five of the Junior Club team were all going to be away the same weekend.
It also means that if one or more of the Dramadaries leaders is not available things become even more difficult.
In the Junior Club (Years 3 to 6) over the last few weeks leaders and members have been working with the Desert Detectives to try to find the Mighty GodSword.
It turned out that they should have been looking for the Mighty God’s Word.
In the summer term we will be using a series of DVD film clips, plus some games and activities as we follow a Target Challenge theme, looking at David as shepherd boy, as the future king. and as an outlaw.
And, if we get a reasonable summer this year, the programme will include some of our popular water games.

The Southlands Dramadaries, which also meets on Fridays, but from 7.15pm to 9.00pm, is for young people in Year 7 to Year 9, and has an emphasis on drama, the Bible and games, but also has a period of free time.

In January, when the central heating was not working, one club evening for both Junior Club and Dramadaries went ahead in Room 2 after the fuse controlling the power supply to the community centre blew and lights and temporary heaters there went off. The emergency lights automatically kicked in in the Community Centre and provided enough light for the Tuck Shop to operate. So there was a steady procession along the gallery between Room 2 and the tuck shop.

Leaders tried to keep intervening doors closed to prevent the heat escaping from Room 2 which is on a different electricity supply.

Both clubs offer a special star badge which can be purchased by members and we hope that the five points of the star will help them remember that the club is affiliated to the Methodist Church Shell Group movement and that therefore the club attempts to encourage members to ...
